UK Packaging EPR Explained for Small Businesses
UK packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) makes businesses that put packaging on the UK market pay for and report on it. Here's what it means for a small brand, in plain words.
This is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so check the latest guidance on GOV.UK or with an adviser.
Who it applies to
- UK-established businesses. The UK importer or brand owner usually carries the duty, not an overseas supplier.
- Thresholds: businesses with more than £1 million turnover that handle over 25 tonnes of packaging a year must register and report.
- Small producers (between £1 million and £2 million turnover, or 25–50 tonnes) register and report data but don't pay waste management fees.
- Large producers pay fees that depend on how recyclable their packaging is.
What it means for your boxes
Even if you're under the thresholds today, choosing easy-to-recycle packaging now saves work later, and customers increasingly care about it.
- Plain corrugated or card boxes with water-based inks
- No plastic windows or plastic lamination
- Paper tape and card inserts instead of plastic and foam
- The material type and weight per box recorded on every invoice
How we help
Every invoice we send lists the material and weight of each box, so the numbers you need for reporting are already in one place. See our eco materials page or ask for a recyclable box quote.
